Have ridesharing services led to an increase in accidents?
A study conducted by the University of Chicago and Rice University indicates that the growth of
ridesharing services has contributed to a 2% to 3% rise in traffic fatalities in the U.S. since
2011. According to government data, the number of traffic-related deaths rose from 32,885 in 2010 to
37,461 in 2017, affecting all types of road users. Researchers suggest that the rise in fatalities
is partially linked to the increased vehicle registrations and the total miles driven since
rideshare platforms like Lyft became popular.
